Hosseini is using foreshadowing to highlight this scene in the book. Later in the book when Hassan's son shoots Assef in the eye with a slingshot, the reader remember this scene and think "I should have seen this coming." Foreshadowing also creates a sense of foreboding because the reader knows that
something is going to happen, but not what.
I like this because the I never realized this use of foreshadowing when reading the book myself. Did you consider that using foreshadowing might ruin the book because you get to know what will happen. I guess you are right by saying that it also creates a sense of foreboding as you don't really know what will happen, just that it might.
